This identity community is here to provide resources for non-traditional Raiders!

A nontraditional student is an adult student who is older than the traditional undergraduate, who has had a break in his/her formal learning experience and is now returning to the university or entering the university for the first time. These students have additional responsibilities not common in traditional undergraduates. They may be full-time employees, primary breadwinners, caregivers for children or adults, veterans, or individuals returning to college after a break in their education. A nontraditional student can be enrolled full-time or part-time.

At Shippensburg University, non-traditional students are often identified not only by age, typically outside the traditional 18-22 range, but also by unique life circumstances that set them apart from traditional college students. These students may be returning to school to advance their careers, transitioning from the workforce, or even pursuing a degree later in life. Some may be balancing education with family responsibilities, whether as parents, caregivers, or working professionals. Non-traditional students at Ship may be enrolled full-time or part-time, attending classes on campus or online, and each brings a wealth of diverse experiences that enrich our university community. The Shippensburg University Career Center is here to support non-traditional students by providing tailored career guidance, resume assistance, and professional development resources to help them achieve their career goals.

At Shippensburg University, it’s important for students of all ages to be aware of their rights in the job market.

  • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) protects individuals 40 and older from discrimination in hiring, firing, pay, promotions, training, and other employment decisions. Understanding these protections can help you navigate the job search with confidence.
  • To stay competitive, consider developing new skills that align with your current or future career goals. Identify any skills you may need and take advantage of free workshops, online courses, or career coaching available through the Shippensburg University Career Center.
  • When crafting your resume, consider “age-proofing” it by focusing on your most recent and relevant experiences. Unlike a CV, your resume should highlight key accomplishments without listing every position you’ve ever held. Removing outdated information can help shift the focus to your strengths and avoid potential biases.
  • Networking remains one of the most effective job search strategies. Expand your professional connections by joining industry associations, updating your LinkedIn profile, and leveraging the Ship Career Center’s networking opportunities. Engaging with alumni, faculty, and peers can also provide valuable career insights.
  • Whether you’re re-entering the workforce, pursuing a second career, or just starting out, seek opportunities that align with your passions and long-term goals. The Career Center is here to support you with resources, career advising, and tools to help you succeed at any stage of your professional journey.
