Career and You: Tools to Help College Career Life for International Students

Before starting your career journey please check your legal work status and the application for CPT/OPT processes with the Center for Global Education/International Student Support.

Discovering and Exploring are part of getting to know yourself and what lies ahead based on that, it is journey through your college career and beyond.

Discovering and Exploring” can be expressed in many forms. It can involve assessing your interests and recognizing your skills, strengths, and values.

Researching the Right Fit

Career Assessment tools such as What Can I Do With This Major? and Career Coach can get you started on that path. These kinds of tools can help to narrow down which major may be the right fit and which industries and roles you may want to pursue post graduation.

With What Can I Do With This Major?, you get access to their Occupational Handbook which provides:

  • Details about specific roles within the industry you choose
  • Outlines the required education level for each role
  • Includes information on expected pay for these roles
  • Offers step-by-step guidance on how to pursue a specific role

Networking

There are many tools that can be used to expand your network when being a past or present Shippensburg Student.

Tools such as LinkedIn and Handshake as well as the campus Job and Internship Fair during Career Week can help aid making these networking connections for jobs and beyond.

Next is all about how you can prepare for a job search. This means creating a job search toolkit to support your career action plan by refining your resume and cover letters and practicing interviewing skills

Resumes

A resume is what introduces you to an employer and is what can get your foot in the door for a job. It gives the employer your qualifications for a position based on experience and educational background. A way to make your resume standout is with professional language and powerful action verbs .

Cover Letters

A cover letter provides candidates with a valuable chance to introduce themselves to potential employers in a tailored manner. It enables applicants to share their motivations, showcase relevant skills and experiences, and express why they are an ideal fit for the role.

Interview Skills

Practicing and preparing for an interview is an important part to making sure you have all the tools you need to be best prepared once you get an interview. Using tools such as Big Interview, a mock interview tool, can help to prepare you for potential interview questions and get you used to an interview setting.

Professional Dress Wear

First impressions are important, especially in career. You can access a professional wardrobe on campus in the career center. Each semester you can get a full professional dress outfit free of charge and is yours to keep.

The final step is to take action and put what you developed into play. “Taking Action” is where you apply for jobs, internships, and build your experience and network up.
