Perks Of Having a Job On Campus

From paid research studies to part-time student employment, there are many opportunities to work at CU Boulder. In addition to earning money, working on campus is a great way to gain work experience, meet others and get involved. Here are some perks to having a job on campus.

Meet new people

Working on campus with other student employees allows you to meet and spend time with fellow Buffs. Campus departments like the Rec CenterEnvironmental CenterResidence Life and Campus Dining Services are some of the largest employers of students.

On-campus employment allows you to work more closely with faculty and staff. It also gives you a chance to connect with students who may not be studying the same major but have similar interests as you. Not to mention it can help make a big campus feel small.

Build your network

The people you meet and the work you do at an on-campus job can open doors to opportunities after graduation.

Working on campus is a great way to build your network and your connections that could help you find work after you graduate. Staff and faculty can become mentors and may be able to connect you with internship or research opportunities or provide letters of recommendation. In fact, it’s not uncommon to meet staff members who started as CU Boulder student employees and continue to work at CU Boulder because of the relationships and connections they built during their college years.

Flexible schedule and convenient location

Whether you’ve got a packed schedule or you’re taking just the right amount of classes, one of the major perks of working on campus is flexibility.

Most on-campus jobs and paid research studies offer scheduling that can fit around your class and study schedule. Many students work between 10 and 15 hours a week, with a maximum of 25 hours per week for fall and spring semesters and up to 40 hours per week during the summer months.

Also, because you are likely going to be on campus for classes, having a job that is only a five-minute walk away or in the building next door can help you make the most of your time. Find more information about student jobs by visiting the student employment website.

Gain work experience and build skills

Student jobs on campus can help you build professional skills and gain experience. These skills that you develop over time can be used in future careers. These can include:

  • Customer service
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Time management
  • Leadership skills

There are also many student jobs that may be specific to your major, such as graphic design, social media or research. No matter what job you have on campus, you are likely to learn skills and gain experience you can add to your resume and help you get to the next step. Learn more about building skills through the Skills for Success program with Career Services.
